The distressful feeling of something moving in your head all the time, and the constant itching on your scalp, these are the obvious symptoms of active lice thriving on your head.
Lice measures about just one-sixteenth of an inch and its wingless. It lives close to your scalp, lays eggs, and feed on your blood.
Lice are highly contagious, it can spread from one person to another through hairbrushes, comb, clothing, pillows, and mattress.
Use a delousing Shampoo
Apply a delousing shampoo to your hair and scalp leave it on for 10 minutes and rinse it off using cool or warm water.
Use the shampoo again after 10 days.
Choose a shampoo that contains permethrin over lindane. Lindane is linked to nervous problems and some studies have found a link between lindane and brain cancer.
White Kitchen Vinegar
After rinsing your hair using your favorite shampoo rinse it again using a mixture of 50 percent water and 50 percent white kitchen vinegar.
White kitchen vinegar helps to dissolve the bodies of dead nits. Make sure to rinse it thoroughly a few times to get rid of the odor.
Vinegar and Olive Oil
Mix half a cup of vinegar with half a cup of olive oil and apply this mixture generously over your head and scalp. Put on a shower cap and leave this mixture on for about 60 minutes.
After one hour, remove the cap and rinse your hair using the regular shampoo.
Mayonnaise
The popular white colored sauce is also a popular remedy to get rid of lice. Apply mayonnaise to your hair and scalp generously and put on a shower cap before going to bed. Rinse off your hair the next morning using shampoo of your choice.
Mayonnaise will leave the lice dead. However, you have to remove the louse eggs by hand.
Petroleum Jelly
Petroleum jelly suffocates the lice and restricts its movements and ultimately leads to its death. Apply a generous amount of petroleum jelly to your scalp are and cover it overnight using a shower cap.
Use mineral oil or baby oil in the morning to remove the petroleum jelly along with the dead lice.
Repeat this several nights till all the lice are gone completely.
Note: Use a generous amount of water to rinse off your hair using shampoo to get rid of petroleum jelly completely.
Essential Oils
Essential oils not only kill off the lice it also helps to soothe irritation and itching sensation.
A popular combination that works really well for lice is 20 drops of tea-tree oil, 10 drops of rosemary oil, 15 drops of lemon oil, 15 drops of lavender oil, and 4 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Mix all these ingredients together and apply it over your scalp and hair. Leave it on for around 60 minutes and rinse off your hair using shampoo and water.
How to Stop Spreading Lice
If someone in your family has lice, then avoid sharing the bed, combs, hair brushes, hats, scarves, hair ribbons, and anything that comes in direct contact with the person’s hair.
After a successful treatment of lice, wash the clothing, bedding, and other washable in warm water, dry it in the sunlight if possible or use hot air.
Seal off all the non-washable items in a plastic bag or use a ziplock and keep it away for a week at least. Else refrigerate for three days.
